Learning objectives

The main objective is that of showing the difficulty of the aesthetic themes emerging from Salons, demonstrating differents opportunities for reading and for research with special attention to the most recent bibliography.

Prerequisites

The student needs to have knowledge of basic aesthetics and of some fundamental moments of its history.

Course unit content

Firstly the course proposes to introduce the figure of Diderot within the Aesthetic of France in the Seven Hundreds. The main complex themes of the Diderotian aesthetic, with a special reference to the emerging questions in Salons.

Bibliography

Translation of Salons by Diderot. Other texts by Diderot: The theory of painting, the Letter on deaf mutes, the Treaty on beauty, the reference to Art in the
Encyclopédie.

Teaching methods

The lectures will follow a seminary style; the participation of the student will be greatly encouraged.

Assessment methods and criteria

A written report that will be discussed in the oral examination is to be expected. During the oral examination the student should also include subjects covered in the lectures.
