Obiettivi formativi

The students will learn the main electromagnetic wave propagation mechanisms, how to describe and recognize unwanted conducted and radiated emissions and interferences, as well as the strategies to design electromagnetically reliable and robust circuits, in accordance with national and international EMC regulation and directives.

Contenuti dell'insegnamento

The course will introduce the basics of electromagnetic signal propagation in an automotive environment where many different sources can influence and disturb its reliable transmission. Moreover, it will deal with the different aspects of electromagnetic compatibility of electronic circuits in complex environments. Filtering and shielding techniques for conducted and radiated disturbances will be discussed, along with conventional measurement methods and instrumentation.

Programma esteso

Module 1
• Basics of electromagnetic wave propagation. Maxwell Equations and Wave Equation. Guided and free space propagation.
• Phasors and Fourier Transformation. Harmonic regime.
• Plane waves. Transmission and reflection for planar interfaces.
• Transmission Lines: lumped element model. Reflection and Matching. The Smith Chart.
• Fundamental of Antennas. Near field and far field regions. The Friis formula.
• Main antenna parameters: radiation pattern, directivity, gain, loss, equivalent circuit, effective area.
Module 2
• EMC Directives: directives for automotive. Test sites for measurements and conformity assessment procedures.
• Disturbance and Shielding: Conducted and radiated emissions. Conducted and radiated immunity.
• Automotive Data Communication Buses: CAN, Flex Ray, Ethernet and MOST.

Metodi didattici

The activity will be mainly based on presential theory lectures integrated with classroom exercises; group and CAD experiences will allow students to apply theoretical knowledge to practical problems.

Modalità verifica apprendimento

The exam is based on an oral test aimed to verify the student knowledge and understanding of basic EMC phenomena. The oral test will last about one hour and will cover all the aspects met during the course.
