Internships
The professional training starts from the second period of the first year.
As you can see in the Study Programme, the first year it corresponds to 14 ECTS (350h), the second year 15 ECTS (375h) and the last year 23 ECTS (575h).
At the end of the first year the student must be able to:
1. know the characteristics and the organizational context of each site, distinguishing the role of the different figures that work there;
2. carry out activities related to the oral hygiene of the Dental Hygienist in relation to the contents learned and the exercises performed;
3. describe and explain the use of specific instruments and medical material present in a dental clinic;
4. to assist the patient, during and after the dental examination using the material and the necessary instruments;
5. assist the patient in the reception phase in the hospital in the reference operative unit;
6. perform the extra and intra-oral examination (inspection-palpation-auscultation) using the appropriate material and instruments.
TRAINING CONTENT:
1. observation of the activity in the clinics as a whole;
2. disinfection of the operating unit and sterilization of the instruments;
3. reception, preparation and discharge of the patient;
4. restoration of consumables;
5. patient appointment management;
6. Professional oral hygiene therapy in patients of developmental age and adults with PSR 0-1-2 and / or risk of caries
At the end of the second year the student must be able to:
1. formulate the oral hygiene treatment plan based on the patient's general and oral health status;
2. know the clinical diagnostic-therapeutic protocols in use;
3. know the ergonomics of work;
4. know and perform the correct procedures relating to:
- personal, medical and dental history review;
- extra and intra-oral exam;
- periodontal charting;
- dental charting;
- photos
5. know and perform therapies based on the patient's therapeutic needs:
- tartar ablation;
- application of plate detecting means;
- sealing;
- compilation of PSR and periodontal files;
- fluoroprophylaxis;
- application of desensitizing agents;
6. know the basic instrumentation for the execution of specific oral hygiene therapies;
7. know and implement dietary assessments aimed at the prevention of oral and dental diseases;
8. know the interview techniques for the disposal of tobacco-related behaviors.
9. know how to evaluate the patient's overall health in order to carry out a complete treatment plan;
10. know the tools and know how to perform professional oral hygiene therapies;
11. know the main interventions to protect oral health in the community and apply them;
12. know and apply suitable interventions in emergency situations;
13. demonstrate an ethical behavior;
14. demonstrate communication skills, help relationship;
15. demonstrate ability to collaborate on the field of team work;
16. know the research and analysis methods of scientific literature.
TRAINING CONTENTS:

8. Critical interpretation of scientific articles useful for choosing and applying appropriate oral hygiene therapies
9. Dietary evaluation
10. Smoking disposal consultancy.
At the end of the third year the student must be able to:
1. demonstrate a progressive autonomy in the management of the oral hygiene treatment plan;
2. demonstrate a progressive autonomy in the instrumentation;
3. recognize the risk factors in patients in oral hygiene therapy;
4. know the assistance plans related to the different systemic pathologies with compromised oral cavity;
5. apply suitable pre and post surgical therapies (implantology, maxillofacial, oral surgery)
6. demonstrate a progressive autonomy in the realization of professional skills regarding the prevention of oral cancer;
7. demonstrate a progressive autonomy in the implementation of oral hygiene counseling;
8. know how to evaluate the effectiveness of the care provided;
9. identify the contextual situations that may constitute the object of interest of a research within the dental hygienist profession.
10. gain full autonomy for the profession of Dental Hygienist;
11. know how to program, according to the patient's needs, the intervals of recall of oral hygiene;
12. know the legal and administrative requirements concerning the profession as an employee or freelancer;
13. know how to prepare a correct and complete curriculum vitae.

Students will be required to purchase materials for the internship activity.
In particular, a complete kit will be needed for the first visit and periodontal instrumentation, a protective visor, a mirror for patient motivation and education, a periodontal model for the dummies classroom, a work uniform and a pair of sanitary safety shoes .
The approximate global cost will be around 1000 euros courtesy of the discounted rates reserved for students of our University
