Integrated course unit module: CLINICAL NURSING IN CRITICAL CARE AND EMERGENCY

Learning objectives

By the end of the course students will have acquired the basic notions of orthopaedics and traumatology and concerning functional bandaging and plaster casts. <br />
Students will also be required to recognise emergency cases in the orthopaedic and traumatology fields. <br />

Prerequisites

Students must possess basic notions in the field of surgery. <br />
Students must possess basic knowledge of the anatomy of the muscular-skeletal system and its physiology. <br />

Course unit content

The programme will be given to students during the first lesson and includes the basic orthopaedic and traumatological injuries with particular reference to emergency treatment in this area. In particular: <br />
1. GENERAL FRACTURES <br />
• Classification. <br />
• Local and general complications. <br />
• Clinical and instrumental diagnosis. <br />
• Principles of orthopaedic and surgical treatment. <br />
• Conditions of the callus (delayed consolidation and pseudoarthrosis). <br />

2. SPECIFIC FRACTURES <br />
• Proximal femoral fractures. <br />
• Vertebral fractures. <br />
• Wrist and carpal scaphoid fractures. <br />

3. SPRAINS AND DISLOCATIONS <br />

• Ankle sprains. <br />
• Scapular-humeral and acromionclavicular dislocations. <br />
