Learning objectives

The course, articulated in theoretical lessons and individual practice training is aimed to supply the necessary basic notions for the qualitative and quantitative determination of substances of pharmaceutical interest. In particular, during the practical training the attention will be focused on the qualitative analysis of inorganic salts and on the quantitative determination of either inorganic or organic analytes.

Prerequisites

General and Inorganic Chemistry

Course unit content

Safety and first aid procedures in the chemical and pharmaceutical laboratory. Symbols, risk and safety phrases. Hazard chemicals handling procedures.
Lab equipment and instrumentation: the analytical balance, burettes, pipettes, the pH-meter, calibration of measuring devices. Basic laboratory techniques and operations: solubilisation, dilution, concentration, desiccation, precipitation, decantation, filtration, centrifugation, solvent extraction.
Introduction to Qualitative Inorganic Analysis. Preliminary Tests. Solubility. Combustion assay, flame test. Qualitative analysis in aqueous solution: reactions of main anions and cations, analysis of acid insoluble residual.
Introduction to Quantitative Pharmaceutical Analysis. Sampling. Experimental error: types of errors, precision and accuracy, expression and propagation of uncertainty. Calibration curves. Standard and normal solutions. Volumetric and gravimetric analysis.
Alkalimetry and acidimetry: preparation and standardization of solutions. Analysis of the titration curve: choice of the indicator, potentiometric determination of the final point.
