Learning objectives

The Audiology V module is part of the Integrated Course of Audioprosthesis V (3rd year-1st semester of the CdS in Audiprastic Techniques) and has the aim of allowing the student to know and understand the essential elements of the Cochlear Implantation in the area of auditory rehabilitation of severe / profound or total bilateral neurosensory hearing losses. The student must acquire the ability to use knowledge and understanding in order to identify the audiological indications and contraindications, to interpret the selection process of the Candidate Patients to the Implant and the relative path of verification / electrophysiological regulation and perceptive-logopedic rehabilitation.

Course unit content

The teaching of Audiology V includes the Cochlear Implant as the main topic. The plant, its components and its operation are first described; therefore the indications, contraindications and the selection procedure for patients who are candidates for the implant are analyzed; some hints of surgical technique are explained; then, the electrophysiological verification / regulation procedures of the plant are treated; the lessons conclude with elements of logopedic rehabilitation of patients with Cochlear Implant.

Teaching methods

The oral lessons provide for the presentation in video-projection of the contents with the help of filmed documentation of particular audiological and clinical aspects. The last minutes of the lesson are reserved for students' questions of clarification. Discussion of emblematic clinical cases is expected.

Assessment methods and criteria

The assessment of learning and acquired knowledge takes place during the appeals provided by the teaching calendar, by means of an oral question, in the presence of the Teachers Committee of the Integrated Course of Audioprosthesis V. The student must be able to demonstrate knowledge on the Cochlear Implants , on the audiological indications to the implant, on the selection path of the candidate patients and on their auditory results.

Other information

Lectures will be held on-site in compliance with safety standards, provided that further instructions on the ongoing health emergency are not implemented. Supporting material will be available on the specific, student-reserved platform (Elly) and will include slide presentations, audio-video aids or video-recording of the lectures.
