Learning objectives

At the end of the course the student shall:
- Have acquired specific knowledge on drug’s permeation mechanisms across biologic barriers
- be able to understand the differences between in-vitro, ex-vivo and in-vivo models
- be able to highlight advantages and limits for each methodology
- be able to select the most appropriate model for the simulation of a selected route of administration

Prerequisites

The knowledge of pharmaceutical technology and of pharmacology is needed.

Course unit content

The course aims to provide students with notions of the main methodologies for the in-vitro and ex-vivo evaluation of drugs’ permeation across biological barriers.

Full programme

General introduction on aseptic techniques and in vitro cell culture methods
In-vitro and ex-vivo models for buccal permeability studies
In-vitro and ex-vivo models for intestinal permeability studies
In-vitro and ex-vivo models for nasal permeability studies
In-vitro and ex-vivo models for pulmonary permeability studies
In-vitro and ex-vivo models for ocular permeability studies
In-vitro and ex-vivo models for dermal permeability studies
In-vitro and ex-vivo models for vaginal permeability studies
In-vitro and in-vivo method correlation

Bibliography

Scientific papers and slides will be provided by the teachers on Elly portal on a weekly basis.

Teaching methods

The course will be delivered with face-to-face lessons (32 hours overall, corresponding to 4 CFU). Lessons will be held in the classroom with the help of Powerpoint slides summarizing covered contents. Slides will be available on Elly platform on a weekly basis.

Assessment methods and criteria

Acquired knowledge will be assessed by means of a written exam, duration 45 minutes, consisting of 15 multiple choice questions (score for each question varies from 0 to 2) about the contents of the course. The student is qualified (idoneo) if the exam is judged equal or superior to 18/30. The results of the exam will be published on ESSE3 portal (https://unipr.esse3.cineca.it/Home.do) within one week from the date of the exam. Students will be allowed to view their tests, by appointment with the teachers.
