Learning objectives

This course aims at providing basic knowledge on use and behaviour of electric drives in industrial environment, and at producing designers of factory automation.

Prerequisites

Mathematics, Calculus, electric circuit theory, Physics.

Course unit content

Transformer.<br />Steady state model of transformer. Dynamic model of transformer. Equivalent circuit of transformer. No-load test, locked rotor test for parameters characterization of machines. Power balance and efficiency. Frequency analysis and Bode diagrams. Principle of physical constructions, principle of three-phase transformers, autotransformers.<br />Induction machines<br />Principle of operation. Rotating magnetic fields. Construction of induction motors. Squirrel cage machine, and casted rotor machines.<br />Steady state model and dynamic model of induction machines. Equivalent circuit. Power balance and efficiency. Torque and mechanical characteristics. Slip. Speed control and regulation. Single-phase induction machines.<br />Synchronous machines<br />Principle of operation. Construction of synchronous motors. Salient poles, and permanent magnets. Brushless motors. Equivalent circuit. Power balance and efficiency. Torque and mechanical characteristics. Speed control and regulation. <br />DC machines<br />Principle of operation. Construction of DC motors. Brush, collectors, Salient poles, and permanent magnets. Equivalent circuit. Power balance and efficiency. Torque and mechanical characteristics. Speed control and regulation. Torque control. <br />
