Learning objectives

Optical communication B is a course in optical systems designed to describe and characterize the signal propagation within a WDM fiber-optic system in the nonlinear regime.

Prerequisites

Suggested pre-requisite: Optical communication A
Course unit content
The main subject of the course is the signal propagation within an optical fiber in the nonlinear regime. Contents:
Introduction, motivation and state of the art. The nonlinear Schroedinger equation. Propagation in the linear regime: chromatic dispersion. Propagation in the nonlinear regime: self phase modulation. Cross phase modulation. Four wave mixing. Optical wave breaking. Soliton regime.
Raman effect. Noise Parametric gain and modulation instability. Parametric amplifiers.
Project rules for WDM systems.
New modulation formats tolerant to nonlinearities.
Polarization mode dispersion.
