Learning objectives

At the end of the training activity the student must have acquired knowledge and skills related to the risks present in a biomedical laboratory with particular reference to chemical risk. In particular, the student should be able to:
1. Know the prevention and protection systems in place in a biomedical laboratory with respect to chemical risk.
2. Know the hazard classification of chemical agents and risk communication according to the European Regulations REACH and CLP.
3. Interpreting a label and a safety data sheet (SDS).
4. Use chemical hoods and personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly.
5. To know the main chemical risks present in a biomedical laboratory.

The course aims to allow the student to apply the knowledge and understanding acquired within the framework of future professional activity.

Course unit content

The course aims to address the issues necessary to know the causal links between exposure to chemical agents and the appearance of adverse health events in terms of accidents and occupational diseases. The main instruments of prevention and protection of health with regard to the specific chemical risks at work, with particular reference to health, will be considered. The course provides the fundamental knowledge related to current legislation on safety, health and safety in the workplace.

Full programme

Chemical Risk in the Biomedical Laboratory. Meaning and methodologies of chemical risk assessment. Definition of chemical agent. Carcinogens and mechanism of action. Toxicokinetics and toxicodynamics. Main chemical risks in the health sector: latex, glutaraldehyde, formaldehyde, nitrogen, antiblastics. Chemical Risk Communication (REACH and CLP European Regulations). Reading and understanding of a label and a safety data sheet (SDS). Chemical hoods: differences and modes of use. Personal protective equipment (PPE) related to chemical agents.

Teaching methods

During the lectures will be presented and discussed the topics, indicated in the program trying to involve the student so that he can be an active part of the lesson. The lessons will take place in presence. The teaching material, on a weekly basis, will be deposited on the specific platform reserved for students (Teams or Elly) and will include: iconographic presentations, audio-video support or video recording of the lessons. The teacher is available for clarification on the lessons by appointment (agreed by e-mail) in the office or at a distance via Teams.

Assessment methods and criteria

The assessment of the achievement of the objectives of the course includes an oral examination. Through questions regarding the course contents it will be ascertained whether the student has achieved the objective of knowledge and understanding of the contents and whether he has achieved the objective of applying the acquired knowledge.
