Learning objectives

At the end of the course students will have acquired knowledge and skills related to CAD/CAM tools and systems and related methodologies, technologies and functionalities, as well as unconventional manufacturing processes such as laser materials processing, additive manufacturing (AM), ultrasonic machining, water jet cutting, abrasive water jet cutting, electrical discharge machining, friction welding and electrochemical machining. Teaching will be carried out according to a systematic approach based on the modelling of these processes, in order to allow interpretation and understanding of the laws and mechanisms on which they are based. For each unconventional manufacturing process, the advantages and limitations compared to traditional machining and potential in the production of specific components will be analysed.

Course unit content

The objective of this course is to study CAD/CAE/CAM technologies and systems (Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Engineering/Computer Aided Manufacturing) for product design, as well as planning and programming of production and manufacturing processes for mechanical components. The course includes the study of unconventional manufacturing technologies for which the use of computer numerical control (CNC) is essential: laser materials processing, additive manufacturing (AM), ultrasonic machining, water jet cutting, abrasive water jet cutting, electrical discharge machining, friction welding and electrochemical machining.

Teaching methods

Lessons will include both theoretical discussion of CAD/CAE/CAM systems and various unconventional technologies, as well as the analysis of real cases in which these technologies have been successfully introduced into production environments. Practical exercises will be carried out on some technologies in order to promote a greater understanding of the topics covered during the lessons.

The course is assigned 6 credits for a total of 48 hours, distributed as follows on the main topics of the course:
- Introduction: 2 hours
- Computer numerical control (CNC): 4 hours
- ISO programming: 4 hours
- Algorithms for automatic generation of the toolpath & CAM: 2 hours
- Electrical discharge machining: 4 hours
- Water jet and abrasive water jet cutting: 4 hours
- Ultrasonic machining: 3 hours
- Electrochemical machining: 3 hours
- Friction welding: 4 hours
- Laser materials processing: 12 hours
- Additive manufacturing (AM): 6 hours

Assessment methods and criteria

The final exam will verify acquisition of the required knowledge and ability with a 2-hour written exam.

The written exam comprises:
- a numerical and/or technical/practical exercise with a total value of 15 points on computer numerical control (CNC) systems, ISO programming and CAM systems
- an open question worth a total of 15 points on one of the unconventional manufacturing technologies addressed during the course
