Learning objectives
Students will study the horse's principal metabolic parameters and their diagnostic uses in the determination of the functioning and health of the horse's principal organs. In additions, students will learn the composition of the principal organ profiles in terms of clinical biochemical parameters, and they will develop knowledge of their diagnostic potential. Lastly, students will learn the relationship between the horse's metabolism and the behaviour of metabolic parameters connected to the principal nutrients in the horse's diet in various phases of its competitive career, in order to evaluate the suitability of the dietary regime in function of the animal's requirements in successive stages of its life and its use in the sphere of sports.
Prerequisites
Students are required to possess knowledge of chemistry, biochemistry, and equine physiology
Course unit content
The course develops the study of the principal metabolic parameters of the horse, essential in practice for determining the animal's state of health and the functions of the principal organs. The profiles of the principal organs are studied: muscle, liver, kidney, pancreas, haematological and electrolytic functions

Teaching methods
The course consists of theoretical frontal lessons, and practical lessons in which notions are applied. The final exam takes the form of an oral examination and a practical test during which students must demonstrate their understanding of the concepts that have been studied regarding the metabolic evaluation of the horse.
