Learning objectives

<br />to improve the skills for analysing and assessing pollution sources and loadings<br />to improve the knowledge on the wastewater biology and technology. <br />

attendance of the first two year courses

Course unit content

<br />Pollution sources and estimation of pollution loadings. Source identification. Pollutiuon typologies.  Urban wastewaters. Diffuse agricultural loadins. Industrial wastes. Population equivalents. Coefficients for estimating BOD, COD, N and P potential loadings. Pollution effects on surface and groundwaters.Italian and international laws and standards.<br />Biotechnological wastewater treatment plants. Integrated systems.  Biological systems. Biological components of the biological system: the activated sludge system. Biological reactors. Order zero and first order kinetics. Design of a biological reactor. Trickling filters. Biodisk. Fate and reuse of biological sludges. International and national standards. <br />Extensive wastewater treatment plants. Lagoons. Phytodepuration: Lemna system and subsurface filters. Horizontal (SSF-h) and vertical (SSF-v) subsurface vertical flow. Vegetation, microbial communities and biogeochemical reactions. Design of a small SSF-h system. sacle Sistemi di fitodepurazione a flusso sub-superficiale orizzontale e verticale. Buffer strips, constructed wetlands, cover crops.<br />Practical work. Visit to the municipal wastewater treatment plant of Parma (Parma Ovest). Visit to the SSF-h wastewater treatment plant of the dairy farm S. Vittoria (Carpaneto, Piacenza).<br />
