Learning objectives

The expectation is that, at the end of the module, the student will be able to:

1. Understand the impact of domestic violence on the growth of the sons and daughters who attend it;

2. Recognize the complexity of gender-based violence, whose multiple roots are to be found in psychological and relational elements, family and cultural influences;

3. To develop a capacity to read and analyze the main epidemiological data available in Italy on gender-based violence so as to give the phenomenon a dimension;

4. Understanding how a correct psychological welcome and a path of analysis and support can accompany in change the women who suffered violence and the men who act it.

5. Recognize the contribution that a fair medical-legal assessment can offer to the woman who suffered violence.

Prerequisites

No prerequisites are required.

Course unit content

I meeting - Thursday 24.11.22, 2.30-4.30 pm

A maieutic laboratory will be proposed. Through a story, students will be lead into the emotional experience and the system of meanings of a child who lives in a family where violence is present.

Elements of understanding of the phenomenon from children point of view will be offered starting from a qualitative survey on the hearings of 29 minors heard at the Juvenile Court of Bologna.

II meeting - Monday 28.11.22, from 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm

Through a debate on short texts distributed in advance, we will touch on some cultural and social elements that form the background to gender relations, helping to determine or, on the contrary, to prevent or deconstruct violence (social or judicial language, relations between cultures, impact of the covid-19 pandemic, etc.).

The most recent national epidemiological data on gender-based violence as a whole will also be analyzed.

III meeting (online) - Thursday 1.12.22, 2.30-4.30 pm

We will explore the most common psychological dynamics present in women who suffered violence and in men who acted it. We will also present the intervention of Anti-violence Centers and Centers for men who use violence. In this regard, videos will be screened by Silvia Carboni, psychologist and psychotherapist of the Casa delle donne per non subire violenza (House of women for not suffering violence) in Bologna, and Gabriele Pinto, psychologist and psychotherapist of Senza Violenza (Without Violence) in Bologna, a center helping men who use violence and are willing to change.

An insight will be offered on the contribution that a correct forensic assessment can offer to the recognition of violence, and on the obstacles that are most frequently faced in this field.
