Integrated course unit module: HYGIENE, PUBLIC HEALTH AND HEALTH POLICIES

Learning objectives

The objective for students is to attain knowledge and comprehension of the key topics in hygiene and public health. At the end of the course, the student is expected to be capable of classifying the most significant determinants of health and disease within the sphere of infectious and vaccine-preventable diseases, as well as tumors.

Course unit content

The "General and applied hygiene" module is an integral part of the course HYGIENE, PUBLIC HEALTH AND HEALTH POLICIES and covers general and specific aspects of hygiene and public health.
The teaching is focused on primary prevention and in particular the epidemiology and prophylaxis of vaccine-preventable diseases, in different age groups: childhood diseases and vaccines of the National Vaccine Prevention Plan, adult, elderly and of groups at risk. In addition, vaccination schedules and strategies are presented

Full programme

Preventable infectious diseases with vaccinations or public health strategies. Poliomyelitis, diphtheria, tetanus, viral hepatitis B, whooping cough, measles, rubella, mumps, chickenpox, herpes zoster. Invasive bacterial infections, Haemophilus influenzae type b infection, pneumococcal diseases, meningococcal meningitis. HPV infections, influenza virus infections and control strategies, rotavirus, viral hepatitis A, typhoid fever, yellow fever. Other infectious diseases preventable with vaccinations (Covid-19, dengue, cholera, Japanese encephalitis, rabies, tick-borne encephalitis).

Teaching methods

The course will be delivered through traditional lectures, supplemented by case studies and interactive sessions. These formats allow students to engage with real-world scenarios, emphasizing the practical application of epidemiology and public health tools in healthcare settings.

Slide presentations will be used to support lectures, and these materials will be accessible to students on the Elly platform (https://elly.medicina.unipr.it)

Assessment methods and criteria

Assessment:
The course is concluded by a single final exam, which is a written test. The final exam aims to assess students' abilities in connecting, learning, critically analyzing, and solving specific cases in public health, which they have acquired throughout the course.

Exam Details:
The final exam consists of 31 multiple-choice questions, which students are required to answer within a 45-minute time frame.
