Integrated course unit module: LABORATORY MEDICINE

Learning objectives

The student should (1) know the most prescribed laboratory techniques in clinical pathology, Biochemistry and microbiology (2) understand their role in diagnostic procedures, follow up and therapy, (3) properly evaluate their cost/benefit ratio and (4) apply this information to relevant clinical examples.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of biochemistry, molecular biology and microbiology/virology is required

Course unit content

The course aims to provide specific knowledge in the field of laboratory techniques. In particular, topics of biochemistry and clinical and translational molecular biology will be explored. This will allow understanding of the data production process, their interpretation, and their role in the clinical setting.

Full programme

-Biological sample preparation, cell separation, cell cultures, cytometry and flow cytometry
-Nucleic acid and protein electrophoresis, Western-Blotting, ELISA assay
- Fundamental concepts of Molecular Biology, end-point PCR, Real-Time PCR, DNA sequencing using the Sanger method.
-Omic technologies in molecular biology and their applications: next generation sequencing, gene array, RNA-seq, single cell RNA-seq.

Bibliography

All the links for further information will be provided during the frontal lessons

Teaching methods

The course will be conducted through interactive lectures in front of the students, with the aid of illustrative material as slides Power Point.
