Course unit content

The lessons will address the issue of social control and the criminal justice models. Particular attention will be given to the role of social work in the context of criminal justice. The lesons will be focused on the relationship between social service and criminal justice for juvenile delinquency. The last part of the course will consider the interactive processes involved in juvenile justice context, with particular reference to penal mediation between author and victim of the crime.

Teaching methods

Lectures and workshops seminars.       In the first part, oriented to theoretical and basic concepts of the discipline, will be used primarily traditional lessons ; in the second part the course will be completed with exercises and discussions by videos and other materials. The final part of the course will be devoted to some workshops, case studies, simulations, run by experts (social workers, judges and lawyers) oientes to: criminal policies in the treatment of juvenile delinquency, the use of illegal drugs , forms of mediation, in the relationship between the legal and the welfare system

Assessment methods and criteria


Final assessment includes a written exam consisting of three open-ended questions related to the whole program of study. The assessment isdesigned to verify the study of the three obligatory books.      The examination will focus on the following areas of learning: Knowledge and understanding (knowledge and understanding) of the issues and topics ; • Knowledge and understanding applied (applying knowledge and understanding) to social services, in particular by the theoretical learning applied with seminars and tutorials; • Making judgments (making Judgements), in particular providing interpretative hypothesis and personal reflections on the various issues presented during the course; • Communication skills (communication skills) of the student: he knows how to describe the learning • Ability to learn, retain and develop the learning, even in a personal way. The criteria of evaluation will be the clearness, the critical remarks and the personal considerations.
