Learning objectives

Areas of application of Applied Geomorphology. The geomorphological risk and its mitigation. Knowledge of the geomorphological hazards and risks in the various morphoclimatic systems, recent climate-related dynamics and anthropic pressure. Geomorphological cartography in spatial planning. Geomorphological resources and environmental impacts, geomorphological assets and cultural heritage. Italian regulatory framework for risk mitigation and tools for spatial planning.

Prerequisites

Geomorphology

Course unit content

References to the basic concepts of Geomorphology, processes and forms in the environment, and scope of application of Applied Geomorphology. The risk and its components, hazard and vulnerability. Risk mitigation. Hazard and geomorphological risks related to surface processes, slope instability, in river environment, in coastal, karst environments, in glacial, periglacial and desert morphoclimatic environments. Proxy-based analysis techniques for the evaluation of the geomorphological instability. Overview of cartographic symbology of forms and processes. Cartography for the evaluation of the geomorphological hazard: map of the geomorphological dynamics, integrated analysis map, synthesis map of the geomorphological hazard. The contribution of geomorphology to the assessment of seismic and volcanic hazard. Geomorphological hazards, climate and extreme weather events in mountain, plain and coastal areas in relation to human presence.
Italian regulatory framework for risk mitigation and tools for spatial planning. Geomorphological resources and environmental impacts. Geomorphological assets and cultural heritage.
