Course unit content

The course deeps the psychological, relational and social content and processes related to the self and tothe construction of identity, which will be analyzed according to the approaches developed within social psychology: From cognitive approaches, synthesized in the “cognizer self” metaphor, to the social approaches that emphasize the idea of a socialized self, to the motivational ones that focus on the phenomenological self, to postmodern approaches that support the idea of a dialogic and polyphonic self, and of a fluid, saturated and kaleidoscopic self.
The analysis of the main instruments and methods of analysis of the self and of the identity within the different approaches will be part of the contents of the course.
Some lessons will be about the changes of the Self in postmodern societies and about the importance that in this age plays the cultural dimension on the one hand, and the possibilities of experimenting with virtual selves on the other hand. The psychosocial analysis of gossip and reputation functions will complete the picture of the topics that will be addressed in the course.
