Learning objectives
To gain knowledge of physical exercise-induced adjustments and adaptations: positive effects in healthy subjects, and in main degenerative diseases; contraindication to competition in sports; sports nutrition, hydration, and supplementation; training and competing effects in adverse environmental conditions; gain knowledge about what kind of physical activity to prescribe (type, intensity, duration, frequency) in which clinical context and how to administer it; doping history, WADA prohibited list, national and international rule, current legislation, penalties, controls, side and expected effects of drugs. To frame doping related problem in the present social and cultural context.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of biochemistry, anatomy and human physiology.
Course unit content
Tasks and functions of Sports Medicine; safety of competitive and non competitive sport activities, and physical activity promotion. Precompetition medical examination.
Altitude and heat illnesses; hydration, nutrition and supplementation. Exercise and cardiovascular risk: hypertension, diabetes, obesity, dyslipidemia, metabolic syndrome, inactivity. Sport anemia. Strain rabdomiolysis. Fatigue (overreaching e overtraining).
Drugs and sport. Drug prescription in sports. Doping: definition, history, motivation, related problems, risk, and sport activity safety. National and international rules. Antidoping: controls procedures, CONI and federation regulations, FMSI role, sanctions, current legislation limits. WADA prohibited list. Fight against doping: actions strategies.
