Learning objectives

This course intends to provide its students with the skills and knowledge needed to understand the history of Italian contemporary theatre, within the framework of the first-level degree descriptors (i.e., the Dublin Descriptors).
At the end of the course a student is expected to:
- Have a critical knowledge of the key-figures, plays, tendencies of Italian contemporary theatre.
- To be able to recognize the main components and the dramaturgical structures of a contemporary play
- To be able to address the topics through the specific terminology of theatre studies
- To be able to structure a research in theatre studies and to access to bibliography and sitography.

Course unit content

The course introduces to the history of italian theatre from the half of XXth C. to our days, taking in consideration its development in parallel with the history of Italian society and culture. The course also interacts with the theatrical season in Parma: we will assist to two plays, and we wil analyse them so to acquire the specific terminology of theatre criticism.

Full programme

TITOLO Italian theatre from the Fifties to the present
10 hours (2credits) The reconstruction and the fifties: Eduardo De Filippo in Naples, the Piccolo Teatro in Milan; theatre on the stages, theatre in television
10 ore (2 cfu) Italian theatre from the Sixties to the Nineties. Neo-avanguards, political theatre,visual theatre, “animazione teatrale”, theatre of narration.

10 ore (2cfu) The tendences nowadays: encounters with the stage

Bibliography

- Unities concerning "Storia dle teatro contemporaneo" erogated on Elly Platform, blended mode
- Historical and critical essays to be found on-line on Elly Platform since the beginning of the class

Three plays:
• Dario Fo, Morte accidentale di un anarchico
• Bertolt Brecht, The good person of Szechwan
. Samuel Beckett, Waiting for Godot

Teaching methods

Frontal teaching and cooperative analysis of plays and playwrighting.

The course will also be offered through blended modality through the learning platform called Elly.

Assessment methods and criteria

For the students who partecipate to the class:

a) WRITTEN WORK: diary of observation of a play (guide-line available on platform elly)
The evaluation is expressed in judgments (insufficient, sufficient, quite good, good, excellent) and it contributes to the final result in the proportion of thirty per cent. The written text must be delivered at least ten days before the date of the exam.

b) ORAL INTERROGATION concerning the topics afforded during the classes and the essays thar are part of the bibliography. Th evaluation is expressed through numbers (from 18/30 to 30/30) and contributes to the final results in the proportion of 70 per cent.

THE STUDENTT WHO DON'T FOLLOW THE CLASS MUST AGREE WITH THE TEACHER THEIR TOPIC FOR THE WRITTEN WORK, OR AGREE TO SUBSTITUTE THE WRITTEN WORK WITH AN ESSAY EXTRA TO STUDY FOR THE ORAL EXAMINATION
