Integrated course unit module: ORAL-MAXILLOFACIAL PATHOLOGY AND THERAPY

Learning objectives

The course aims to enable students to know and understand the specific discipline, in order to provoke a passion exceeding the simple overcoming of the final examination of the course, stimulating in them the curiosity to deepen the varied arguments so to reach a good professional training to be able to diagnose and to differentiate the varied pathological conditions during their future activity.



LEARNING OUTCOMES



The students at the end of the course will demonstrate knowledge and understanding about:






Embryology and oro-maxillo-facial anatomy

Congenital malformations: lip and palate cleft, syndrome of the 1st and 2nd branchial arch, craniofacial dysostosis

Dysmorphoses: maxillary retrusion, maxillary protrusion, mandibular retrusion, mandibular excess, laterognazia, open bite, macroglossia

Traumatology: wounds of the face, maxillary, zygomatic, mandibular fractures, condylar fractures, malunited craniofacial fractures

Neoplasms: skin cancers of the face and lips, epithelial tumors of the oral cavity and jaws, Etiology and pathogenesis of carcinoma of the oral cavity, symptoms and signs of cancer and cervical metastases therapy, combined therapies, staging, mesenchymal tumors, cysts and odontogenic tumors , salivary gland tumors, reconstructive maxillofacial surgery

Inflammatory processes: odontogenic maxillary sinusitis, oro-antral communications, salivary stones, sialodenitis

Temporomandibular joint:temporomandibular joint ankylosis, recurrent dislocation, extra-articular limitation of mouth opening

Teaching methods

Class lessons and practice. The program themes will be discussed with the aid of slides. The proposed topics will be the subject of collective discussion and study on the basis of ideas and any questions raised during the lessons themselves.
Due to the emergency situation, lessons may also be delivered remotely (either in synchronous or asynchronous mode) via Microsoft Teams.

Assessment methods and criteria

The achievement of the goals of the course is verified by an oral exam.
Answering questions about the contents of the course, the student will demonstrate whether he/she has achieved the goals of knowledge and understanding of the contents and the ability to apply the acquired knowledge.
