Learning objectives

At the end of the training activity the student should have gained knowledge and medicinall chemistry skills of the therapeutic classes treated in the program. In particular, the student should be able to: - Understand the chemical characteristics of the drugs included in the therapeutic classes treated in the program, their uses, biological activity and toxicity, the relationship between the chemical structure and biological activity, the interaction with the biological substrate, the chemical-physical and metabolic aspects (Knowledge and understanding). - Apply his knowledge of the drug's action and pharmacological profile, understand its phisical chemical and metabolic aspects and their influence on pharmacological activity, identify the structural features important for the drug action, use a proper nomenclature according to international rules (Ability to apply knowledge and understanding). - Expose concepts in a clear and straightforward way and through a formally correct language, be able to interact with people with scientific training in different areas (Communication Skills). - Know how to evaluate the relevance of the different therapeutic classes treated in the pathologies considered (judgment-making judgments). - Link the different topics dealt with each other and with basic and related disciplines (Learning Skills).


Knowledge of organic chemistry, biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology.

Course unit content

Drugs used in the treatment of hyperlipoproteinemia and antithrombotic. Drugs of endocrine and metabolic system, FANS.

Full programme

Antilipoproteinemic drugs and inhibitors of cholesterol synthesis: Bile acid sequestrants, HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, cholesterol absorption inhibitors, fibrates, nicotinic acid. Insulin and medications used to treat diabetes. Corticosteroids: Biosynthesis of corticosteroids. Development of corticosteroid drugs. SAR. Thyroid function and thyroid medications. Calcium homeostasis: pharmacological therapies for osteoporosis, for hyperparathyroidism, for hypoparathyroidism, for hypercalcaemia. Female sex hormones: estrogenic and progestinic substances. Male sex hormones: androgenic substances. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs: Antipyretic analgesics. Anti-inflammatory analgesics. COX-2 inhibitors. Drugs for the treatment of arthritis. Antithrombotic drugs: anticoagulants, antiaggregants and fibrinolytics.

Assessment methods and criteria

The module Supplement to Medicinal Chemistry is part of the integrated course Supplement to Medicinal Chemistry / Biotechnology Drugs.
The achievement of the objectives of the course is checked by oral examination. The mark will be averaged with that relating to the part of biotechnology drugs.
Through questions regarding the course topics will be determined knowledge and understanding of the student.
Through questions about the connections between different topics, the interpretation of the action and the pharmacological profile of drugs, the structure-activity relationships and structure-pharmacokinetic properties will be cheked the skills of the student. This is the minimum threshold for the exam to be sufficient.
It will also evaluate the student's ability to communicate knowledge and skills in verbal form through the use of an appropriate language.
