Learning objectives

This course aims to provide the informations and the scientific underground to approach correctly the main topics in Clinical Biochemistry by students of pharmaceutical sciences.

This knowledge is needed especially by a professional like the chemist which is at the connection between patients and medical structures also to orientate between many specific diagnostic devices and tools for specimen’s collection, treatment and managing commonly available in the chemist shop.

Prerequisites

There are no obligatory prerequisites, but Clinical Biochemistry is an interdisciplinary science and needs the basic knowledge in Biology, Anatomy, Physiology, Chemistry, Biochemistry and General Pathology

Course unit content

The first part of the course will concern the study of biological samples to know their characteristics and their possible alterations. This part will be related to the patients preparation for blood sample drawing and to the conservation of the sample itself (pre-analytic variability).
Then will be refreshed the main analytical techniques and instrumentations to evaluate the molecules of interest in Clinical Chemistry. Analytical and post-analytical variability affecting the laboratory data. Clinical laboratory quality assurance. Kits for diagnostic tests.
POCT technology, evolution and test available at present and the applications of POCT technology; skills required for professionals working in the pharmacy (Dlgs 153/2009)

The last part of the course will concern the basic knowledge for the comprehension and the use of the most common marker of organs damage and functionality. In particular the basic biochemical profile, cytolysis indexes, cardiac, muscle-skeletal, hepatic and renal functionality markers, urine analysis, operative strategies in case of laboratory analysis of drugs and prohibited substances.
