Integrated course unit module: THEORY AND TECHNIQUES OF JOURNALISTIC LANGUAGE

Learning objectives

Knowledge and understanding: The teaching of Journalism and New Media will enable students to critically analyze journalistic activity - even through new media - and to learn the basics and main styles of today journalism. This knowledge will be acquired through targeted educational tools - lectures, case studies, essays, articles, and bibliography - and will be screened with an oral exam.

Applying knowledge and understanding: The study of journalistic communication techniques and main styles used by current and past journalism - also taking into account tv and new media techniques - should allow students to learn the practical basis of journalism. This knowledge, coupled with the practice represented by internships, should provide writing skills and ability to organize material suitable for writing newspaper articles.

Making judgments: At the end of the course, students, based on theoretical, practical and lingustical knowledge acquired, should have acquired the ability to analyze the communication strategies of journalism, and to make independent judgments.

Communication skills: At the end of the course, students should have achieved the ability to analyze clearly the communication strategies of journalism and be able to argue about them in a scientifically appropriate mode. Also, if aided by a targeted training, should be able to master the main styles of journalism writing and produce correct work from the journalistic point of view.

Learning skills: Students should have gained a capacity for analysis and methodology to be used in practice in the field of journalism and be thorough - and expanded -, on their own, either from additional theoretical contributions, and thanks to new data collected in the field.

Prerequisites

It is desirable, in order to access the course, a basic understanding of the history, genres and language of journalism.

Course unit content

Course on Journalism and new media (6 credits)

Course Title: "Online Journalism between crisis and hope"

The course will explore the new frontiers of online journalism. In particular, we will hatch new journalistic genres (data journalism, explicatory journalism, citizen journalism, and more generally the use of user generated content) and the new stylistic-formal mode of online journalism, such as live blogging. Part of the course will also address new ways of dissemination of content through social networks, as the home page of the online media has become less and less important. Finally, I will try to outline the difficult economic situation of the publishing world still looking for a good business model for online, while the old model - based on paper - is at the end of his life cycle. Part of the course will, of course, hatch the general theoretical framework of journalism and new media.

Bibliography

References

For now I will only give two texts that will be used for the general part ((only non-attending students will study one of the two texts).

Carlo Sorrentino e Enrico Bianda: "Studiare Giornalismo. Ambiti, logiche, attori", Carrocci, 2013

Alessandro Barbano (in collaborazione con Vincenzo Sassu): "Manuale di giornalismo", Laterza, 2012

For monographic part - having regard to the dynamic nature of the transformations in progress - I will provide some texts - just before and during the lessons. The bibliography will also be published on the course's blog: http://giornalismoparma.typepad.com/teoria_e_tecniche_del_lin/

Teaching methods

The teaching consists of lectures with the use of multimedia tools. In order to encourage student workers (who have always problems in frequency) will use, as every year, a site - http://giornalismoparma.typepad.com/teoria_e_tecniche_del_lin/ - with the summary of my lectures and in-depth material.
