Learning objectives

The course provides students with the knowledge about the history and evolution of Italian geomorphological mapping and techniques of representation of landforms.
During the field work, students will learn the techniques of geomorphological survey and they will learn to draw a geomorphological map and related report. The knowledge for the preparation of geomorphological map through the use of software tools will be given.

Course unit content

Introduction to geomorphological mapping. Geomorphological processes and landforms. Criteria applied in geomorphological mapping. Short history of geomorphological mapping with regards to italian one. The Guidelines for the geomorphological map of Italy (Italian Geological Survey 1994): definition, contents, criteria for geomorphological data acquisition and representation, other data supplied with the geomorphological map.
Analysis and interpretation of italian geomorphological maps including examples based on the Official Geomorphological Map of Italy (scale 1:50,000). Notes to new geomorphological map of Italy (ISPRA-AIGeo, work in progress).
Geomorphological survey: data acquisition, the use of remote sensing in geomorphological survey, the activities connected to field geomorphological survey. The field survey of landforms and deposits. Methods to recognize the state of activity and to investigate the age of landforms. Field work in the Northern Apennines: the students will learn to do a geomorphological survey and draw up a geomorphological map and the report for the work done.
