Learning objectives

SELECTED TOPICS of MEDICINAL CHEMISTRY:At the end of the teaching activity, the student must have acquired chemistry knowledge of the classes of drugs treated in the program and the most important concepts in medicinal chemistry. Details are described in the course Syllabus.
BIOTECHNOLOGICAL DRUGS: The main goal of the course is to provide basic information to know and understand the properties, application and problems related to the production, characterization and use of drugs of biotechnological origin.
The comprehensive introduction on methodologies for production, characterization and purification of protein therapeutics, and the description of their pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic properties, toxicity and immunogenicity will allow the student to apply his/her knowledge to the identification and evaluation of the relevant properties and issues related to each biotech drug.

Prerequisites

Students who intend to take Supplement to Pharmaceutical Chemistry/Biothecnological Drugs examination must have already taken Pharmaceutical and Toxicological Chemistry I and Pathology exams

Course unit content

This is an integrated teaching consisting of two modules, Selected Topics of Medicincal Chemistry and Biotechnological Drugs. The first module deals with the drugs used in the treatment of hyperlipoproteinemias, antithrombotic drugs, drugs of the endocrine system, drugs on inflammatory and immune responses.
The second module deals with the main biotechnological methodologies and the main classes of biotechnological drugs used in various therapeutic areas, including hormones, enzymes, cytokines, monoclonal antibodies.
