Course unit partition: TECHNICAL ARCHITECTURE

Learning objectives

During workshop activity, a learning goal is the awareness of importance of the design procedure so as the interaction between its phases – from territorial to technological scale (I descriptor). The understanding and the capacities to continue learning will be also improved (V descriptor).
Other aims are to apply knowledge to the project with full consciousness and informed judgements (II and III descriptors).
Students will be often called to explain their designs during the workshop activity in collaboration with the part of Technology of Architecture, so that graphic and oral communicative capability will be improved (IV descriptor).

Course unit content

This section focuses on the running of the design process – from preliminary to executive phase; on the corresponding requested technical documents; on normative issue related to simple buildings design – minimum standards, morpho-dimensional rules and material characters contained in “Technical Standards for Implementation” and “Building and Urban Code”; finally, on good building practises.
The most important building performances related to the spatial and environmental characters are introduced, according to the building technological system theory introduced in the section “Technology of Architecture”.

Lectures concern:

• Architecture and Sustainability (European sustainable buildings review)
• Building Standards and rules
• Project drawings: site design; plans, sections and building facades (1:100 and 1:50); technological details (1:10 or 1:5)
• Residential building typologies: terrace houses review
• Residential building typologies: detached and semidetached houses review
• Residential building typologies: storey houses review
• Small houses and technological details
• Building envelopes (exterior materials catalogue)
• Technological maquette

Teaching methods

This part of studio is organized in lectures, workshops on particular design topics, coordinated with Technology of Architecture, and seminars with external experts.

Assessment methods and criteria

The studio ends with the final test in which every students team presents its own project and is examined in order to verify the capability to apply the theory and the level gained.

The final mark will encompass both the “in itinere” tests and overall compliance of the project to the early design requests.
More in depth, the final mark will be made of these judgment’s areas:
• Preliminary assessments and site analysis (15%)
• Architectural quality (25%)
• Overall compliance and fairness of the technological systems (45%)
• Drawing and 3d model quality (15%)
• A 5% bonus for the extempore verifications.
