Learning objectives

The course aims to provide students the main contents of Descriptive Geometry and its applications, so as to enable them to translate in appropriate representations the three-dimensional geometric models typical of construction and architecture. The course also aims to provide students with the tools necessary to understand the technical drawings and maps. The study and application of different methods of representation through descriptive geometry, allow students to develop the graphic language and the expressiveness in the specific field of Architecture. In fact, the methods of representation arising from the application of projective geometry are the basis of a two-way link between the existing or planned reality and its model graph measurable. Learn the basics of the discipline means, therefore, understand the role of geometry in the representation and acquire the basic knowledge necessary to master all the tools of design. Simultaneously, the course aims to develop observation skills and visualization of the spatial forms through the mastery of drawing. The skills developed at the end of the course may be briefly summarized as follows: - knowledge and use of the main theoretical concepts and techniques of graphic representation - the acquisition of the major design codes for the description of the architecture - the identification of relationships between the forms of elementary geometry and space - the exercise of free-hand drawing as a tool for describing and studying the forms of architecture.

Course unit content

The course is conducted through lectures whose content is composed initially by the themes of descriptive geometry, by which it is possible to develop designs. The aim is also to homogenize the knowledge of students who comes from different educational paths above-average.
Once students have learned the main concepts aimed at understanding the different methods of representation, the course addresses more generally the design of the typical themes of the different scales of representation (the representation of the territory, of the city, of the building structures and of the architecture) to make students able to express graphically the contents of the following courses, focusing on achievements in the field of human construction.

Teaching methods

To enable continuous learning and gradual integration of systems of representation, parallel to the holding of lectures will be assigned exercises will consist of the development of graphics boards. Those ones, constantly correct, will have exactly the same issues of the lessons, in order to verify the learning by students.

Assessment methods and criteria

To test the learning of course content, exercises will be assigned. These should be carried out entirely by hand. They will relate to the exercise of the hand, the control of the sign and display capabilities through the construction of simplified models. Some exercises will consist of exercises in drawing from life.
At the end of the course it will assign a further final exercise that requires the application of acquired knowledge concerning the principles of representation of buildings at different scales. It will be aimed at creating drawings relating to an architecture previously agreed with the teachers. About this it must be done drawings to different scales of plans, elevations and sections, an axonometric section and one perspective.
