Learning objectives
a. Know mechanics of soils and rocks in static and dynamic conditions.
b. Know the direct and indirect methods of investigation of soils and rocks, providing the basis for the design and management of geognostic investigation.
c. Explore the main geotechnical verification methods with attention to the Italian and European regulations.
d. Explore major applications in geotechnical, with particular attention to the contribution of the geologist
e. Explore the themes of monitoring in geotechnical
Prerequisites
Mathematical analysis, physics, mechanics, statistics, hydrogeology and engineering geology knowledge are helpful.
Course unit content
The course is articulated into the following modules:
Part 1: Geotechnical behavior of soils and rocks
Geological and Geotechnical model - Physical and Chemical characteristics of soils and rocks - Strengths, tensions and stress – Soil behaviour in static and dynamic conditions - Rock Mechanics - Analysis and Laboratory Tests – In situ investigation - Design of geognostic investigation - Statistical analysis in geotechnical - Geotechnical parameters - Local seismic amplification - Liquefaction
Part 2: Geotechnical Testing
European and Italian technical code - Geotechnical verifications at ultimate limit state and exercise limit state - Shallow and deep foundations: bearing capacity and settlements in static and dynamic conditions - Stability of walls and bulkheads in static and dynamic conditions - Upflit and lifting of foundations – Slope Stability in static and dynamic conditions
