Learning objectives

The aim of this course is to provide an in-depth discussion of the most important classes of organic reactions. To do this, the course will concentrate on reaction mechanism, stereochemistry, conformational analysis and catalytic transformations. The generation, structure, and reactivity of commonly encountered reactive intermediates (enolates, carbenes, free radicals, ...) will be integrated into the lectures. The course will also survey modern synthetic methods including the use of organometallics reagents in synthesis. Constant attention will be paid to the presentation of results taken from the literature and to possible industrial application processes.

Full programme

The concept of selectivity in organic synthesis: chemoselectivity; regioselectivity; stereoselectivity. The protecting groups (PGs) in organic synthesis: PGs for alcohols (phenols), amines, thiols, carboxylic acids, aldehydes and ketones. The synthesis of the C-C and C-X (X = N, O, S) bond using organometallic compounds. The literature in organic chemistry: introduction to the use of Reaxys program.

Teaching methods

The format of the class will be lectures of one or two hours each spread over three mornings per week. A regular class meetings will be composed of lecture and class exercises.

Assessment methods and criteria

The examination will consist of an oral test in which the acquisition of the basic concepts of the several topics covered during the lectures will be assessed (12 points). The ability of the students to a) exposing the arguments with a clear and appropriate language (4 points), b) applying the knowledge attained (11 points) and c) manifesting autonomy of judgment (3 points) will be also assessed.
