Learning objectives
At the end of the course, students will be able to distinguish and analyze the principal traits of spoken languages (Italian) and signed languages (LIS), then to know and use the IPA, to analyze the fundamental structures of signs in LIS and their linguistics.

The course is divided in two modules and deals with:
– the sounds of Italian;
– the International Phonetic Alphabet;
– the linguistic structures of signed languages;
– theoretical and applicative differences between spoken and signed languages.

Teaching methods
Traditional classes with home and in-class exercises.
Assessment methods and criteria
Two distinct exams for each module. The registration of the mark consists of the arithmetical average of the two exams. It will be tested (1) the knowledge of the contents of the course, (2) linguistic analysis skills, and (3) clear exposition and argumentation with the use of the technical vocabulary. More in detail:
– a fail depends on a lack of knowledge of the basic fundamental contents, a lack of technical vocabulary and failure in resolving the proposed exercises, a lack of autonomous judgement, analysis, argumentation and communication of the contents;
– scores 18–23/30 reveal minimal performance;
– scores 24–25/30 reveal an adequate performance;
– scores 28–30/30 reveal a very good performance and 30/30 cum laude reveals an excellent performance.
