Integrated course unit module: KIDNEY AND URINARY TRACT PATHOLOGIES

Learning objectives


the student should learn modalities for performing dialysis, including vascular accesses for hemodialysis (AVF and CVC), indications for dialysis in clinical emergencies; renal immunopathology; renal biopsy, performance, preparation, and interpretation; reading and interpretation of urine examination and urinary sediment;approach to the transplanted patient with clinical complications

Dialysis (explanation of dialysis session), The vascular accesses for hemodialysis (AVF and CVC). Indications for dialysis Hemodialysis (practical aspects and vascular access). History and objective examination of the kidney patient. Renal immunopathology. Renal biopsy: preparation, light microscopy and immunofluorescence. Urine examination and urinary sediment. Transplantation: clinical cases.

Teaching methods


The exercises are organized over one week (Tuesday through Friday), according to the schedule described below. A maximum of 8 participants per week are allowed. They will be repeated every week of the academic year. If the exercises have not been done, the exam cannot be given.
Reservations must be made in blocks (you choose and book a week, not individual days in different weeks). Only one week per student is allowed to be booked. Those who book twice are automatically cancelled. Actual attendance must coincide with reservations. Changes of weeks are not allowed, except in cases of force majeure, and must in any case be arranged with the Course Coordinator Prof. U. Maggiore The schedule is fixed and you start on Tuesday afternoons by connecting on Zoom with your tutor at 3 p.m. on the Tuesday of the week for which you have registered:
TUESDAY afternoon (seminar on Zoom platform) 3-6 pm:
- Dialysis (movie with explanation of dialysis session)
- The vascular accesses for hemodialysis (AVF and CVC)
- Indications for dialysis in emergencies

WEDNESDAY at UO Nephrology, meeting with tutor at Chronic Dialysis Department Hall 4 south wing ground floor 8:30 a.m.
- Hemodialysis (practical aspects and vascular access), at the sick bed in the dialysis room

THURSDAY at UO Nephrology, pad 4 south wing Inpatient Unit 1st floor
- Department visit, history and objective examination of the kidney patient with dedicated tutor
Two shifts: enrolled from 1 to 4 (based on reservation enrollment number on teams) 9 a.m.-1 p.m., enrolled from 5 to 8 2-6 p.m. (changes between the two shifts on the same Thursday are allowed, to be handled directly between interested parties)

FRIDAY morning at Renal Immunopathology Laboratory. Be at entrance pad 27 and go down to the basement, hallway to the left Renal Immunopathology Lab (look for lab technicians Chiara Italiano and Giuseppe Vizzini)
Two shifts: enrolled from 1 to 4 (based on reservation enrollment number on teams) 9-11 a.m., enrolled from 5 to 8 11 a.m.-1 p.m. (with technicians)

Each weekly round of exercises will be taken over by a tutor, who will stay with the students throughout the period, disengaging from departmental activities
The slides regarding the Exercises will be uploaded to Elly 2022 (these are the same ones that were used for the online exercises) and can be exam topics.
