Learning objectives

The first objective is to grant a basic level of knowledge of the topic.
The second target is to let the student study in deep bioclimatic topics.
The third objective is the achievement of a critical capability that can guide each student in selecting the most suitable passive bioclimatic solutions to be integrated in a design phase, useful fort their final master dissertation.

Course unit content

The class provides an opportunity to study in deep the relevant topic of technological design and sustainable passive solutions integration: the achievement of energy savings and indoor comfort through the enhancement of the passive behaviour of the building envelope will be study during this class.
The building envelope is the proper place in which the most of the energetic exchanges between the interior and exterior take place as well as the more innovative technical solution are applied.
Furthermore, the building envelope is currently extremely relevant since we can integrate bioclimatic design strategies and passive systems to enhance the overall performance of the building envelope.
The lectures cover the following topics:
• Passive systems for heating (direct, indirect, isolated systems)
• Passive systems for cooling (direct, indirect, isolated systems)
• Brief review of traditional and innovative case studies and anthology of suitable technological solutions
• Evaluation of environmental performance related to different systems
• The energy balance and the application of passive bioclimatic systems

Teaching methods

The class includes both lectures, seminars and classroom exercises.

Assessment methods and criteria

The final exam takes place as a collective seminar in which each group or individual student present their works, developed during the year.
