Integrated course unit module: CORE ARCHITECTURAL RESTORATION AND REUSE STUDIO

Learning objectives

Knowledge and understanding capabilities:
At the end of the course, the student will have a wide and critical view of the materials and techniques for the strengthening of historical structures.

Proficiency:
At the end of the course the student will be able to identify, among all the strengthening solutions able to solve the technical problem faced, the ones which best respect the restoration principles, considering the peculiarities of the examined case study.

Prerequisites

It is helpful if students have attended the Restoration course and the Laboratories of Restoration and of Constructions.

Course unit content

The course is a module within the Final Synthesis Laboratory in Restoration and Reuse of Historical Architecture. Respecting this Laboratory’s organization, also this module is organized in two parts: a theoretical one (in the first period) and an applied one (in the second period).
The theoretical part is focused on the issues of strengthening of historical structures, showing examples of interventions which found an efficient equilibrium between technical effectiveness and respect of historical materials.
In the second period, reviews will be carried out to face the specific strengthening issues of the single groups.

Teaching methods

The course is composed of traditional lectures (taught class), also with Powerpoint presentations, and reviews, in the first period, and of group reviews in the second period. As the course is part of the Final Synthesis Laboratory in Restoration and Reuse of Historical Architecture, the general program of this Laboratory should be referred to for details on the didactic organization (group division, reviews, presentations).

Assessment methods and criteria

The single module has no autonomous judgment, but the learning assessment will be made altogether in the final exam of the Final Synthesis Laboratory in Restoration and Reuse of Historical Architecture, which is oral and consists of an oral qualifying examination.

Other information

As for all the laboratories, attending the courses is compulsory.
