Learning objectives

Knowledge and understanding capabilities:
The student has the possibility of following the slow historical evolution from art to science of constructions, seen with specific reference to the contribution given by Galileo and other scholars.
Proficiency:
The student will acquire specific abilities aimed at the understanding of the relation between art and science of construction and to the development of the architectural and structural design of a building.

Prerequisites

To follow the course with profit the student must be able to design basic structural elements in reinforced concrete, steel, masonry and timber, as well as must have knowledge of geotecnique and foundation techniques.

Course unit content

It is intended to provide application skills on design of buildings in relation to structural performance and constructive techniques.
The course consists of a series of seminars on specific themes: structural schemes of vertical and lateral resistence, slabs, foundations, link elements.
The course's topics are exlained through the discussion of some case studies, considered critical in the evolution of the relationship between art and science of constructions.
Content is explained and discussed through structural design practice.

Full programme

The topics of the course are detailed shown on the University web learning site “Elly”.

Teaching methods

The course is composed of traditional lectures (taught class).
The course consists of a series of theoretical-practical lessons through seminars on specific themes in the field of structural design.
In parallel, a structural design of a building will be developed, coordinate and integrated with the other disciplines, through which the contents of the lessons will be realized.

Assessment methods and criteria

The single module has no autonomous judgment, but the learning assessment will be made altogether in the final exam of the Final Synthesis Laboratory, which is oral and consists of an oral qualifying examination.
Evaluation and discussion of the overall design work is done in a collegial way among the professors of the laboratory.
The discussion has to show how much the student has matured in dealing with a unitary design where all technological aspects are resolved satisfactorily.

Other information

Lecture attendance is highly recommended, as well as the use receiving student time of the professor to clear and to deep topics.
