Course unit partition: THERMOTECHNICAL PLANT

Learning objectives

The theme of energy conservation and a sustainable environment has for several years been at the center of global political, economic and cultural debate. Given the increasing demand of the residential sector on our total energy, the importance of providing students from the School of Architecture with all the tools necessary to realise accurate design of the architectural envelope and thermotechnical plants in order to reduce the energy and environmental impact is clear. The objective of the thermotechnical installation module is to transmit these skills focusing on application.

Course unit content

Initially the course will recap the fundamental concepts of heat transmission and psychrometrics and then cover the fundamentals of comfort in confined environments. The course will outline the topic of building and plant exterior energy efficiency at a regulatory and legislative level and then present the most important construction and installation solutions, stating the magnitudes and planning criteria. Finally the course will illustrate the steps for calculating energy performance and demonstrate some tools for computerised calculations, focusing on their reliability and limitations.

Teaching methods

The workshop will be held in computer labs where students have access to computers and appropriate software to perform the energy certification of buildings. Additional information will be communicated by the teacher during the lessons.

Assessment methods and criteria

The final exam will be based on the presentation of technical reports related to the energy certification of the building chosen for the year's work. The report should include the proposal and evaluation of energy-saving improvements for the selected building.
