Course unit content

Error in tradition and author’s error

Full programme

The individuation of the error can be considered the basic and most insidious point of the lachmannian philology. Mistakes in this field may lead to a false reconstruction of the tradition, and the most important critics of the lachmanian method, starting from Bedier , pointed precisely to the risk of incorrect individuation of the leading errors. But errors can produce themselves in the authograph ,too; so also in the case of manuscripts produced under the guidance of the author it is always necessary to question the acceptability of some forms, so as to avoid promoting to text simple scriptorial lapsuses or, conversely, correcting forms grown out of use but acceptable . In this course, after preliminar examination of some exemplar cases, the students will be assigned the study of specific texts, to be discussed in seminarial form. Specific bibliography will be given during the course.
