Learning objectives

1) Develop the critical skills necessary in adopting translation strategies for different text types, also at a contrastive level.
2) Reach a high level of competence in the various language skills as well as those of translation.
3) Be able to present personal research projects in English.

Course unit content

Discovery Learning – a Corpus Linguistic Approach to English Language Study

The course will examine various text genres with a view to investigating the linguistic and lexico-grammatical markers that distinguish each particular genre. The course particpants will be introduced to corpus linguistics with a view to developing their analytical skills by means of consulting representative and specialized corpora, not only in the general search of meaning in context and co-text (collocation, colligation, semantic preference, positive or negative semantic prosody, but also in the development of both writing and translation skills.
