Learning objectives

Through historical analysis students will acquire the necessary skills to understand the crucial role given to economic development by business techniques and enterprise organization. The study of the challenges faced by entrepreneurs in the course of time and of the solutions adopted to solve them, will allow to critically tackle current issues of the Italian and international economy.

Prerequisites

A basic knowledge of economic history

Course unit content

The course traces the evolution of firms and entrepreneurship in the Western world from the Industrial revolution to nowadays. A special focus will be devoted to Italy, from its political unification to the so-called “economic miracle”, stressing the changes occurred in the economic structure and enterprise organization, and evaluating the contribution provided by industrial firms to the Italian economic development. The interpretative framework that will be offered suggests that in Italy a crucial role has been played by small firms.
