Learning objectives
The course aims to improve the knowledge on the dental, medical and surgical management of patients with infections, allergies and affected by particular type of pain / discomfort in the maxillofacial region. The skills acquired will lead the student to develop critical thinking utilizing the expertise on the topics covered in an active diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of the pathogenesis and clinical aspects of the disease mucosa and bone of the district oro-maxillofacial surgery. Knowledge of biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, general pathology, medical and surgical pathology, pathological anatomy, pharmacology.
Course unit content
To provide the knowledge of semiotics in dentistry through the anamnesis, collection and compilation of the medical record, with particular regard to a proper clinical examination of the oral cavity.
To understand the path to perform a correct differential diagnosis in dentistry.
To provide knowledge of the pathophysiology of salivation and specific protocols for the differential diagnosis of the most common causes of xerostomia and hyposalivation.
To provide the knowledge of the pathophysiology of pain in the oro-maxillo-facial region and the evaluation of dental pain and its differential diagnosis with other diseases. To accustom students to use specific questionnaires on pain and recognize particular forms of oral pain / discomfort, such as burning mouth syndrome.
Knowing how to evaluate which anti-inflammatory drugs and/or antibiotics can be prescribed to patients suffering from infection and inflammation of the oro-maxillo-facial district.
Knowing how to diagnose allergies in dentistry and to manage the allergic patient through specific protocols.

Teaching methods
Lectures, with slides and videos and supplemented by discussion of topics in order to train students in critical skills on the topics and to provide them proper knowledge for the management of the patient affected by specific diseases in the Oro- Maxillofacial facial region.
Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam, in order to ensure the quality and level of knowledge and understanding of the course content and the ability to apply the acquired knowledge to professional practice. The evaluation will also include the quality of student participation during the course.
Other information
The course is complemented by the free participation of students in scientific local, national and international organized as part of the clinic, oncology, pathology and oral surgery and the use of lasers and new technologies in dentistry. Students assist in prevention projects promoted by the associations and national medical and dental providers and from 'Order of Physicians, Surgeons and Dentists.
