Course unit content

<br />Written exercises on stoichiometry: atomic mass, molecular mass, mole, Avogrado’s number; rection types, chemical equations balancing; weight and volume ratios among reactants and products; determination of empirical and molecular formula; limiting reactant and yield. Applications of the ideal gas law and of the real gas law. Composition of solutions. Chemical equilibrium in gas phase. Equilibrium constants. Equilibria in solution: ionic dissociation, solubility, solubility product. Acid-base equilibria: strong and weak acids/bases; definition and calculation of pH, hydrolysis, buffer solutions. Galvanic cells. Laboratory exercitations: 1- dissolution, precipitation, and separation. Simple reactions in aqueous solution. 2- Synthesis of zinc iodide. 3- Determination of the absolute zero T value by application of ideal gas law and Dalton law. 4- Preparation and dilution of solutions with known concentration. 5- Identification of simple inorganic compounds by reactivity tests. 6- Acidimetric titrations – 7- Preparation and crystallization of a coordination compounds; preparation of a silica gel by sol-gel techniques.
