Course unit content
The course includes frontal lessons concerning the grounds of laboratory experiments.
The following experiments will be carried out:
1)alumina: synthesis and characterization through surface area and acidity measurement;
2)determination of carbonates in commercial NaOH pellets;
3)synthesis of manganese (IV) oxide supported on alumina and its use in the oxidation of the benzoin to benzyl; characterization of benzyl through melting point, IR, NMR;
4)extraction of plasticizers from PVC samples; characterization by IR, GC-MS and NMR;
5)chemical recycling of PET: depolimerisation of PET samples and recovery of terephthalic acid; characterization of terephthalic acid by melting point and IR;
6) azeotropic distillation of a mixture water-butanol; calculation of the energetic costs of the process;
7) synthesis of an organic dye and tests of coloration on clothes.
