Course unit content

"Geography and music: the acoustic dimension as a source of geographical knowledge".
The course will investigate the relationships between soundscapes and geographical knowledge. The interest of human geography towards soundscapes has a fruitful interdisciplinary encounter with the musicological studies regarding the spatial dimension of sounds and the interpretation of music inspired by specific geographical areas. The course will offer an overview of the main approaches of geography to soundscapes. Together with a theoretical overview of this interdisciplinary field, a few specific case studies related to the relationships between composers, places and geographical imageries will be discussed in class, with a particular reference to the German Romantic period.
