Learning objectives
Goals of the course:
The course will explore the theme of the relationship between the ecological crisis, environmental conflicts and political conflicts by deeply analyzing the debate on the limits of representative democracy and the proposals and experiences of deliberative democracy and participatory democracy.
The theme of political communication in the environmental field brings into play some fundamental issues such as transparency, awareness of the risks and of possible consequences of political choices, intergenerational responsibility, the theme of the limit. The critical awareness of the forms, possibilities and limits of public environmental debate is therefore a crucial point to define the meaning and prospects of contemporary democracy.

Ecological crisis and political conflicts. The public discussion between deliberative democracy and participatory democracy
Course program:
Ecological crisis and social representations of the environment. Awareness of environmental risks in public opinion. Science, environmental risks and political participation. The conflicts in the definition of a socio-environmental public space. Analysis and discussion of various proposals of deliberative democracy and participatory democracy.
During the course some seminars will be organized with the participation of experts of communication and participation.

Teaching methods
Lectures and interactive lessons combined with discussion time. Vision, comment and discussion of films and documentaries. During the course will be organized some seminars with teachers and experts in communication and participation.
Assessment methods and criteria
Personal student's paths to explore specific issues, with the production of written paper and final oral examination.
