Learning objectives
Molecular engineering of functional materials
Prerequisites
Fundamentals of organic, inorganic and physical chemistry
Course unit content
New materials represent one of the frontiers of chemical research. This course will highlight the working methodology in materials research through the study of different classes of materials. For each class physical, chemical and application aspects will be discussed in a comprehensive way.
Introduction: Nanofabrication via self-assembly and self-organization, transfer of the molecular properties to the macroscopic properties, biological and biomimetic materials.
Specialty polymers: conductive polymers, liquid crystal polymers, self-healing poymers polymeric gels. For each class of polymers, syntheis, structure-property relationship and applications will be presented.
Self-assembled monolayers and LB films
Hybrid organic-inorganic materials:chemistry of surfaces and interfaces, Funtionalization of surfaces. Self-assembly and molecualr recognition on surfaces. Structure property relationship and applications.
