Learning objectives

<br />
To provide an overview of pathology definitions in psychopathology and to make sense of the difficulties in understanding different case histories. <br />
To provide the basis for making categorical diagnoses according to international classification systems (DSM). <br />
To supply the basics of multidimensional diagnosis. <br />

Prerequisites

Aims: <br />
- basic knowledge of the main techniques in psychodiagnostic evaluation from a multi-dimensional point of view, with special emphasis on clinical diagnoses in neuropsychology and psychophysiology. <br />
- to examine patient evaluation strategies from a multimodal diagnosis viewpoint. Methods and techniques for the analysis of behavioural, emotional, cognitive, physiological and relational disorders in people will be proposed. Instruments for a full understanding of human behaviour, also from a differential diagnosis point of view, will be supplied as well as instruments for the planning and evaluation of treatment. <br />

Examination method <br />
Oral exam including texts listed in the reading list. <br />
It is not possible to take more than one exam during the same exam session. Nor is it possible for those who withdraw from the written exam to do so. <br />

Course unit content

General concepts and aim of course: <br />
The aim of the course is to provide information on the main psychological disorders, behavioural, cognitive and emotional, and on the main behavioural disorders over the course of a lifetime. <br />
<br />
An introduction on the concept of normality will be provided and an elaboration of the concept of structure and personality from a behavioural analysis and multidimensional diagnosis viewpoint. The various functional and dysfunctional psychophysiological mechanisms at the basis of many behavioural disorders in particular will be discussed. <br />
<br />
Certain areas of psychological functioning in relation to developmental age, adolescence, and adults, as well as psychopathological manifestations such as eating disorders and substance addiction disorders will be examined. <br />
<br />
The importance of correct and multidimensional diagnoses will be underlined in the context of deciding appropriate therapy and, above all, appropriate preventative and rehabilitative-educational interventions. <br />
Current methods for checking treatment and counselling activities will be described and analysed. <br />
The course will finish with a short description of the main diagnostic categories in psychopathology according to current nosographic description models in mental disorders. <br />
