Learning objectives

<p><br />
The course intends to provide a tool with which to search for and retrieve meaning in context in a framework of Corpus Linguistics.</p>
<p>It also intends to develop theoretical knowledge in the area of translation studies and provide the students with an opportunity to apply such knowledge to practical translation activities using various text types and consulting various electronic corpora.<br />
</p>

Prerequisites

Level of knowledge of English enabling students to follow the lectures without any difficulty (level C1 of the Common European Reference Framework).

Course unit content

<p>Course title: Alla ricerca del Significato / In Search of meaning</p>
<p>The use of a monolingual and bilingual dictionary is just one of the many tools available for the translator in his/her search for meaning. </p>
<p>The aim of this course is to help the student carry out linguistic analysis with the aid of Corpus Lingistics in order to develop his/her translation skills. It will focus then on representative and specialised corpora in the search for meaning in context and in the co-text of any kind of text genre. (collocation, colligation, preferred semantic meaning, positive or negative semantic prosody); it will also develop writing and translation skills.<br />

Gli studenti dovranno seguire le esercitazioni da parte dei collaboratori ed esperti linguistici riguardanti le abilità di scrittura, lessico e grammatica. <br />

Gli studenti sono inoltre tenuti a fare un percorso di auto-apprendimento in aula multimediale da concordare con il docente. <br />

Teaching methods

Classroom and seminar lectures, during which the students will be able to work under teacher supervision. <br />
The exam will consist of a written part (Italian-English translation plus comment on translation choices made, a concordance analysis) and an oral exam. <br />
