Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of developmental psychology

Course unit content

In this course, the main theoretical approaches to the topic of children’s emotions will be developed and discussed. In particular, we will focus on several aspects of emotional development, and on the relation between emotions and socio-cognitive or relational acquisitions and skills.
Further evidence will be dedicated to the concepts of emotion comprehension and competence, and to all the related aspects: recognition, expression and knowledge. Finally, attention will be given to the emotional regulation in the first years of life, and to the precocious interaction between the child and the caregiver, within the process of social referencing.
In the second part of the course, students will be involved in a practical work, where they will be asked to collect data on children’s emotions through an instrument based on drawings. Results and implications of such work will be discussed with the teacher.
