Learning objectives
The aim of the course is to complement the basic hydrologic concepts (acquired in the course “Idrologia”) and to develop the main topics concerning basin management plans, mainly with reference to flood defence. To complete also the knowledge of flood control measures in mountain streams and in plain rivers.

Prerequisites

Idraulica AB, Idrologia, Protezione idraulica del territorio

Course unit content
Hydrology complements. Direct and in direct methods of peak discharge and flood volume estimation: Peak Over a Threshold (POT) and Annual Maxima methods; Gumbel, GEV and log-normal distributions. Regionalisation. Flood volume estimation; Synthetic Design Hydrographs (SDH) for gauged and non-gauged sections. GIS-based distributed and semi-distributed rainfall-runoff hydrological models: characteristics and applications. The HEC-HMS model.
Movable-bed models. 1D models: Exner equation; morphological models for flood routing and sedment transport; Debis flows; Local scouring.
Dam and land protection regulations. Foundation and tasks of River Basin Authorities. River Basin master plans. The PAI of the Po river.
River floodways. Definitions and design methods. HEC-RAS model: theoy and applications. 2D models for flood hazard maps drawings.
